The historical capital of Durres, the excursions by Albania-TravelNet

The historical capital of Durres

The oldest Greek colony on Albanian soil, Durres has also been the historical capital of Albania (1272-1920).
After visiting to the excellent Archaeological Museum, we pass through the castle walls and into the Roman Amphitheatre, the largest in the Balkans.
We enter the galleries of the amphitheatre where gladiators and wild animals waited to fight each other 1,800 years ago. Inside we visit the "Enigma of Durres" so-called by archaeologists.
As well, Durres is also, since the 5th Century, the town of the first Christian community on Albanian territory.
